Hi I'm Robert Brown and I've earned a BSc. in Psychology. My interest is in behaviourism and research. I am a life long learner and I'll be working towards a master's in animal behaviour in the near future. Currently in enrolled at the NSCC taking their Disability Support Professional course as that is a demographic that is underserved that is about to under go another change.
I train using positive reinforcement mostly. I do use negative reinforcement for leash pulling. While in university i studied behaviourism, learning, and dogs. I know there is conflicting information amongst dog trainers I believe some of it is caused by a lack of regulation in dog training, anyone can call themselves a dog trainer. I find most dogs just aren't getting their needs met so unwanted behaviours crop up. I know there are aggressive dogs out there, I haven't met them though. Every dog that has been aggressive has been anxious and once the anxiety had been reduced the aggressive behaviours ended.
Training animals is not Cookie cutter and I have been bitten. The last time happened when I was playing tug with a little terrier. A dog from out of country who never played before was watching and suddenly bit me. Had I been playing attention to both dogs I would have recognized the anxiety growing in the biter. The biter didn't do it out of malice but in an effort to protect the terrier from losing its toy. I let the toy go and the biter let me go too. Couldn't be mad at the biter they were scared and sticking up for a friend
